Comprehension
A. 1.
The people in the houses are so used to the
carts on the street that there are no curious
faces at the windows and no one pauses in
their work. But their eyes look carefully at
the faces in the carts. The carts were used to
take people from the prison to the guillotine.
2.
Some of the people in the carts observe
the street calmly while others look on with
a lingering interest in life. Several close their
eyes and think, or try to get their thoughts
together. Only one man sang and tried to
dance. None of the riders appealed to the pity
of the people.
3.
The horsemen pointed to
Sydney Carton, who they think is Charles
Evremonde. He stood at the back of the cart,
with his head bent down, talking to a girl who
was sitting on one side of the cart and holding
her hand. He had no curiosity or care for the
scene around him; he only spoke to the girl.
Some people in the street shouted against
him. He reacted to them, if at all, with a quiet
smile, and shook his hair a little more loosely
about his face.
4.
The spy was worried
because he thought that Sydney Carton had
cheated him and had fled from prison to
escape being guillotined.
5.
The crowd’s
reaction to Evremonde showed that as he was
a member of the aristocracy, the crowd hated
him so much that they wanted him to die.
6.
He comforted the seamstress by holding her
hand. He also reassured her by telling her that
her death at the guillotine would be quick and
blessed her.
7.
His last thoughts included
a prediction. He saw a beautiful city and brave
people rising from the horror into which they
had sunk. He saw the evils of his time giving
way to a new life of peace and freedom. He saw
the people for whom he lay down his life living
happily and prosperously in an England that
he would see no more. He saw Lucie Manette
with a child in her arms who would be called
by his name and he knew that he would be
fondly remembered and honoured in their
hearts forever. He thought that his sacrifice was
the best thing he had done in his life and his
death would bring a better rest than he had
ever known.

The knitting women seem to be undisturbed
by the spectacle of violence happening in
front of their eyes. They appear calm and count
the number of people being guillotined. The
merciless killing of so many people does not
seem to sway them emotionally at all.
2.
Ye s,
Sydney Carton is a hero. He does not hesitate
to give up his life for the happiness and well-
being of the woman he loved. Even when he
was being taken to the guillotine, he kept calm
and tried to soothe the nerves of the distressed
seamstress. He kept his resolve and his dignity
to the very end.

Sample answer—
Yes, I would help someone even if he or she cannot
give me anything in return. This is because it is
important to do things for the sake of helping other
people, not just in the hope of gaining something
from it. In doing so, we learn to become better
human beings and gain other people’s trust.

Writing
Today is the last day of my life. I am in a cart, being
taken to be guillotined. I see some people shouting
at us. They hate us. They want us dead. Most people,
however, are not bothered. They have seen too
many of these carts to find them interesting
anymore. I feel helpless. I haven’t done anything
wrong; I am but a poor seamstress. What could I have
done to suffer such a terrible death? I feel very, very
scared. My only comfort is a young man with calm
eyes. He holds my hand gently but reassuringly. He,
too, is being carried to his death but he is strangely
at peace. He keeps talking to me about his life and
mine, about faith and peace. I feel calmer after
listening to him. I make him promise not to let go of
my hand until the very end. He promises and keeps
his word.
“If it weren’t for you, dear stranger,” I tell the man,
“I wouldn’t be so calm, for I’m faint of heart. I think
you were sent to me by heaven.”
“Or you to me,” he said, smiling. “Keep your eyes
upon me, mind nothing else.”
He assured me that it would be a quick death and
that I would have nothing to fear.
By the time that my name was called, I was full of
courage and inner strength. I blessed the kind
stranger and even found it in my heart to pray for
those who were to execute me. I hoped that time
would quench the fire of hatred in their hearts and
bring peace to their souls.
