A. 1.
Gopal felt proud and important because his
mother had dressed him in a brown coat with
brass buttons which he wore only on great
occasions. He thought that he looked just like
his father.
2.
The special occasion was that
the Viceroy of India was to pass through Gopal’s
town. He was to alight at the railway station
and get into a richly-decorated, open horse-
drawn coach. Then he would escape to the
hills for the summer in a special car. Circulars
had gone to all schools months in advance,
instructing the authorities that all children
should be well-dressed and lined up on either
side of His Excellency’s route, to cheer and
welcome him. Special training had been given
to the children to participate in the great event.
3.
At the railway station, the children were lined
up according to their size, the better-dressed
ones in the front row. Gopal was excited. The
drill master marched up and down proudly,
as if he was supervising an army parade. Even
the headmaster consulted him about the
arrangements. Every few minutes he looked at
his watch and announced the exact position of
the approaching Viceroy. But an hour passed
without anything happening. The children
began to get restless. The drill master scolded
the noisy ones and went to find out the cause
for the delay. As time passed, it began to get hot.
The whole group started to droop. One by one,
the teachers sought the cool shade of trees. The
children squatted on the ground in groups and
wilted in the heat.
4.
Gopal felt a mixture
of victory and sympathy when the ant that had
been trying to crawl up his leg emerged from
the sand he had thrown on it. He felt victorious
as the ant was puzzled by Gopal’s new tricks
to prevent it from crawling up his leg and he
felt sympathetic at the plight of the tiny ant.
5.
Gopal gently picked up the ant on a twig.
It clung to it and remained still as if admitting
defeat. Then it began to move carefully along
the twig. It came very close to his fingers and
would have climbed onto him if he had not
let go his fingers at that moment and held the
stick by the other end. The ant suddenly faced
an abyss. Then it turned round and started
walking back towards Gopal’s fingers. But
Gopal repeated the trick, shifting his fingers
in time to the other end of the stick. He liked
this game and it went on for a long time.
6.
Gopal shivered with fright at the thought
that it could have climbed over his fingers and
got lost in his sleeves. He looked for it all over his
coat and on the ground. It had completely
vanished!
7.
The ant immediately moved
towards him like an enemy tank in a battlefield.,

C. 1.
This says that the drill master is usually a very
serious person who does not smile much. The
event is so special and provides the drill master
with such a sense of importance that even he
smiled.
2.
Yes, it was like a challenge for
Gopal. He felt that the ant and he were at war
and that he had to defeat it. He kept waiting to
see what the ant would do next and devised
new methods to confuse and deter it. He felt
victorious when the ant seemed to be puzzled
by his tricks.
3.
At first, Gopal was irritated
with the ant which kept coming towards
him even after he had flicked it away. He was
pleased when he had flicked it off very far
away. He kept looking at the ant with interest,
anticipating its next move. He became a little
worried when the ant charged at him angrily.
In the end, he felt sympathetic towards the
little creature and played with it for a long time.
4.
I think Gopal said that because he had
enjoyed playing with the ant. Instead of getting
bored and wilting in the heat when the Viceroy
was late, he occupied himself with a game with
a unique playmate.

The Importance of Sports
Hello friends! The famous author Joseph Chilton
Pearce had once written “play is the only way the
highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.”
I think that it is particularly necessary to think of
this statement in today’s world when fields are
being walled in and we spend more time with our
computers than with our cricket bats.
As you may have guessed by now, I am here today
to talk about the importance of sports in our lives.
I won’t take up much of your time.
We all know that sports help enhance fitness and
keep us healthy. But we often disregard the fact that
sports also helps to develop character. It teaches
us a sense of fairness and teamwork. If we look
carefully at certain sports teams, we shall notice
that they often fail to win a game even though the
individual players are good. It is teamwork that is
lacking. If we work together as a team, supporting
one another, in a sport or in life, we shall always
be able to hold our ground. Constant dedication
towards a sport teaches us discipline and the value
of sacrificing idle pleasures. Playing a sport involves
a lot of decision-making, whether we realise it or
not. I remember playing basketball with my father
as a child. He never let me win unless I deserved it.
I realise now how he made me take every decision
as to how to maneuver the ball until I scored a
point. This has made me much more confident as
a sportsman and an individual today. It showed me
that, with concentr
ation, I am able to take the right
decisions.
Sports also helps build physical and moral courage.
It teaches us to take victory and failure equally well,
which is a very necessary skill to develop in life.
Sports prove to be particularly beneficial for young
children. Their restless energy is harnessed by it to
yield a creative outcome. Once they begin to enjoy
sports, they do not waste time in less productive
and unhealthy activities like watching television
and so on.
Sports therefore help in the all-round development
of the personality of an individual. Learning to play
with the correct spirit on the field helps inculcate
in us the correct spirit to play the game of life—a
spirit of courage, strength, support towards others,
resilience and fair play. Should we then stay within
the sedentary confines of our homes or run out
to the field to grab at what life has to offer to us?
Thank you.
