Comprehension
A. 1.
As the Outlaws neared Archie’s cottage,
they heard the sound of crockery and Archie’s
unmusical singing. They opened the kitchen
door. The scene was chaotic as always, but
instead of palettes and paint brushes, bottles,
glasses and jars filled the kitchen. There
were plates on the floor, the chairs and in the
sink.
2.
Archie was upset because he had
recently held an exhibition of his paintings
and all of them had been returned unsold. He
was trying to forget about it by throwing a
party.
3.
Archie wanted the Outlaws to not
get in his way while he was making preparations
for the party. He did not want them to eat any
of the food that he was preparing for his guests.
He also asked Henry not to enter his studio. He
wanted the children to go away so that he could
concentrate on his work. He also said that they
could have all the food that was not meant for
the party.
4.
William was supposed to post
the invitations. He had forgotten to post the
letters. He found them at home in the pocket
of his raincoat.
5.
William was horrified as
he had forgotten to post the letters of invitation
and he felt that Archie was preparing for a party
that no one would attend. He decided to get
together some people so that Archie could
have a party.
6.
William was wondering
how to get people for Archie’s party when
three cars stopped and four people got out
of each car. They asked William for directions
to Marleigh and William led them to Archie’s
house.
7.
They were bewildered because
they wanted to buy paintings from a famous
art collection. Instead, they found themselves
being welcomed by Archie, who was unknown
to them, and being offered food and drinks.
8.
When the real guests came, they said that
they had not received an invitation to Archie’s
party. They realised that William had forgotten
to post the letters. Soon, the former guests
came back to return Archie’s paintings and said
that William had led them to Archie’s house.

C. 1.
Archie was not worried even when he did
not recognise any of the guests because he was
too busy being the perfect host to register the
fact that these people were unknown to him.
2.
I think what William did was not right. He
misled both Archie and the people who wanted
to go to Marleigh. If I was William, I would have
owned up to Archie that I had forgotten to post
the invitations.
3.
No, I do not think this is
the end of the story. I am sure that Archie and
his friends would scold William for failing to post
the letters and misleading the twelve people
who wanted to go to Marleigh. William would
be made to realise his mistake and to own up.

Sample answer—
If we forget to do what someone told us to
do, we must own up to our mistakes and take
responsibility. This helps us become mature adults
and also helps us to develop coping and problem
solving skills.

Summary:
Mr and Mrs Kapoor often organised parties at home.
They decided to invite their new neighbour, a doctor,
to one such party. They sent a written invitation
to the doctor and received a note in return. They
couldn’t understand what was written in the note,
so Mr Kapoor took it to a pharmacist. The pharmacist
read the note, took out a bottle of pills and gave it
to Mr Kapoor, asking him to take the pills twice daily,
for three days.

Aman: Kaif, I thought you said you would join me at
the library yesterday? I waited for over two
hours but you didn’t show up.
Kaif:
I’m so sorry, Aman. I forgot all about it and
went out with my father.
Aman: What? How can you say that? It was YOU who
said we must meet and prepare for the quiz
competition together. You do remember it’s
on Saturday, don’t you? That’s just four days
away!
Kaif:
Oh yes, I do. I apologise, Aman. I promise to
make up for lost time. I shall come over to
your house every evening for the next few
days so that we can prepare together. Is that
okay?
