A. 1.
Arunima decided to climb Mount Everest.
She took this decision when she was lying in a
hospital bed and feeling very weak. Her left leg
had been amputated. A rod had been inserted
in her right leg, from knee to ankle, to hold the
broken bones together. She felt that she needed
to start afresh.
2.
Bachendri Pal is the
first Indian woman who successfully climbed
Mount Everest. She encouraged Arunima by
telling her that she had made a huge decision
which showed that she had managed to
conquer her doubts and fears. Now she needed
to climb the mountain only to show the world
what she was made of.
3.
Arunima did
a basic course from the Nehru Institute of
Mountaineering. This was followed by eighteen
months of strenuous training. She climbed
smaller, but no less dangerous mountains,
had a couple of near-death experiences and
underwent spirit-crushing pain. She supported
herself with a grant from the Nehru Institute
of Mountaineering. Then Tata Steel provided
her with a generous sponsorship that allowed
her to focus completely on the impossible task
that lay ahead.
4.
Arunima’s prosthetic
limb created unique problems when she tried
to climb. The ankle and heel would constantly
swivel as she tried to climb, making her lose
her grip often. Any pressure on her right leg,
which was held together by a steel rod, caused
intense pain.
5.
Every climber who aspires
to climb Mount Everest has to cross four camps
on the way to the peak. Once Camp 4 has been
reached, there’s 3,500 feet to the summit. This
area is known as the ‘death zone’ because
many climbers have lost their lives here.
6.
When Arunima reached the summit of Mount
Everest, she raised the Indian Flag on the peak.
Then she used the last of her oxygen to take
pictures and videos of herself on the peak. It
was important for her to have visual records
of her achievement to show to the world.
7.
So far Arunima has climbed five peaks—
Mount Everest in Asia, Mount Kilimanjaro
in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount
Kosciuszko in Australia and Mount Aconcagua
in South America. She still plans to climb Denali
Peak in North America and Vinson Massif, the
highest peak in Antarctica.
8.
Climbing
mountains has taught Arunima the most
valuable life lessons. It has taught her about
confidence, team building and leadership. But
above all it has taught her to be humble. She
says that it doesn’t matter what you achieve in
life. What matters is how those achievements
make you a better person. How you treat others
is what makes you a good human being.
B.

b. it was an impossible dream for her.
2.

4.

C. 1.
Arunima achieved this by setting what
seemed the most impossible goal for herself—
climbing Mount Everest with a prosthetic limb.
She not only dreamed of this climb but began
to work towards it despite the discouragement
she received from people around her. This
showed that she had conquered her inner
doubts and fears and nothing that people
said could dissuade her.
2.
Arunima’s first
display of mental strength is in the fact that
she was determined to climb Mount Everest
with a prosthetic leg soon after her accident.
Her refusal to give up on her dream despite the
intense pain she felt during her training, the
disadvantages caused by her prosthetic limb
and the near-death experiences she had show
her immense strength. Even when her Sherpa
firmly told her not to continue climbing towards
the peak when her oxygen supply was critically
low, she stood her ground and did not give up. In
the end, her courage and determination helped
her achieve an impossible dream.
3.
The
lack of a building and a field does not dissuade
the members of Shahid Chandrashekhar Azad
Khel Academy. They take permission to play in
other people’s fields and pursue their dreams
in this way. Yes, I think that this in itself is an
achievement. They do not need a conventional
school in order to follow their goals. They have
enough belief in their dreams to pursue them
even when the odds are against them.
