CHAPTER 8 STUDENT BOOK (MCB) ANSWER KEY
Warm up
Visual impairment is the functional
limitation of the eye or eyes or the vision
system. The symptoms of visual impairment
can range from colour blindness to hazy
vision to total lack of vision.
Visually impaired people learn to cope with
day-to-day activities by using the other four
senses.
The senses of smell, touch, hearing and
taste help them to ‘see’ the world.
Comprehension
A. 1.
In the morning, John sees the sun pushing
through the curtains. Grandpa cannot see
the sunlight. He tells John that it touches him,
warming him awake.
2.
Grandpa knew
where Nana was by listening intently to the
sounds coming from the kitchen. Before he
closed his eyes, John could not hear the banging
of pots and the sound of water running in the
kitchen because he needed to concentrate on
his hearing.
3.
John protested when Nana
told him that it was easy to guess the names
of flowers by just smelling them. He said so
because he had incorrectly guessed that there
were carnations while Grandpa had correctly
guessed that the flowers were marigolds. John
felt that all the smells mixed together in the air
and therefore it was not easy to guess what the
smells were.
4.
Grandpa’s plate is arranged
like a clock while eating so that he knows exactly
where to reach for his food.
5.
John learns
to play music using sheets of music placed on
a stand before him. He knows all about musical
notes by reading them from music sheets.
Grandpa knows his music by heart. The notes
are in his fingers and he can play the instrument
with ease without having to look at the notes.
He learns new pieces by listening.
6.
After
breakfast, John and Grandpa played the cello
together in the living room. Later, they walk
outside, through the front yard and across the
field to the river. Grandpa identifies some birds
when he hears their call. They walked back
to the house and drank tea with Nana on the
porch. In the afternoon, Grandpa, Nana and
John take their books outside to read under
the apple tree. Grandpa reads his book with his
fingers, feeling the raised Braille dots that tell
him the words.
7.
Grandpa had told John
that Nana’s voice smiled to him. John decided
to test it to see whether it was true for him as
well. When John asked Nana to repeat what she
had said, she asked him to go to sleep. She said
it sternly but John realised that Grandpa was
right. Nana’s voice smiled to him too when he
looked through Grandpa’s eyes.
B. 1.
he is visually impaired.
2.
know how the
weather is outside.
3.
he uses his sense of
touch, smell and hearing to identify the things
around him.
4.
he knows when the cup is
full.
5.
he closes his eyes and tries to look
through Grandpa’s eyes.
6.
closing one’s
eyes and knowing the world by placing more
importance to the other senses like smell,
hearing and touch.
C. 1.
The first action shows that John sometimes
forgets that his Grandpa is visually impaired.
Grandpa is so independent in his ways that
it seems easy to forget that he cannot see.
The second action shows that he is very
affectionate towards his grandfather and
does not get irritated when he sometimes
makes mistakes because of his impairment.
2.
Yes, the story does give the impression that
Grandpa sometimes does ‘see’ things better
than others. While John doesn’t know where
his Nana is in the morning, his Grandpa knows
where she is by listening to the sounds coming
from the kitchen. He knows what flowers are
blooming by their smell and he learns new
music by listening. While John doesn’t know
the names of many birds, Grandpa can identify
the bird simply by listening to its call. He also
knows which way the wind is blowing and what
the weather is like outside by using his sense
of touch.
3.
John closes his eyes and tries
to experience things like his Grandpa does.
He tries to use his other senses to imagine the
world around him just like Grandpa does. While
eating, he arranges his food like a clock and
tries to eat with his eyes closed. He tries to see
the world with his eyes closed and thereby he
uses his imagination to know the world in the
way Grandpa does.
